The John P. Murtha Institute for Homeland Security’s (the Murtha Institute) focus areas are education, outreach and training, and research and development in homeland security, which includes emergency management, public health preparedness, security and intelligence, and homeland defense.

The John P. Murtha Institute for Homeland Security leads the Indiana University of Pennsylvania’s unified effort to provide quality educational programs, conduct significant research, and provide effective community outreach in the areas of homeland security and homeland defense. We strive to prevent and deter future terrorist attacks, and reduce the threats and hazards to the United States, through our educational and training programs, and our research.

Call for Nominations: The 2008 ASysT Applied Systems Thinking PrizeDeadline for nominations is April 24
The Applied Systems Thinking Institute (ASysT) is pleased to announce the establishment of the ASysT Applied Systems Thinking Prize. The ASysT Applied Systems Thinking Prize is an annual award for a significant accomplishment achieved through the application of systems thinking to a problem of US national significance in the area of national security, homeland security, energy, environment, health care or education. The 2008 Prize will be a monetary award of $20,000 to an individual or team.
The purpose of the Prize is to advance the development, understanding, and application of applied systems thinking in domains of national significance.

IUP Biology Professor Recieves Grant to Develop Bio-Threat Defense SystemFollowing an announcement by Congressman John P. Murtha, IUP is due to receive $1 million through the House Department of Defense Appropriations Bill that will fund the development of systems for the Department of Defense. Biology Professor Narayanaswamy Bharathan will direct the development of a rapid screening and detection system of multiple bio-threat agents for the Department of Defense and other federal and state emergency responders. Bharathan, a molecular biology specialist, is a member of the IUP Weapons of Mass Destruction project team.
