Vision

Conduct research, develop technologies, train professionals, and educate students to protect and defend America from future terrorist attacks and disasters through education, research, and community outreach.

Focus

The John P. Murtha Institute for Homeland Security’s (the Murtha Institute) focus areas are education, outreach and training, and research and development in homeland security, which includes emergency management, public health preparedness, security and intelligence, and homeland defense.

Mission

The John P. Murtha Institute for Homeland Security leads the Indiana University of Pennsylvania’s unified effort to provide quality educational programs, conduct significant research, and provide effective community outreach in the areas of homeland security and homeland defense. We strive to prevent and deter future terrorist attacks, and reduce the threats and hazards to the United States, through our educational and training programs, and our research.

Call for Nominations: The 2008 ASysT Applied Systems Thinking Prize

Deadline for nominations is April 24

The Applied Systems Thinking Institute (ASysT) is pleased to announce the establishment of the ASysT Applied Systems Thinking Prize. The ASysT Applied Systems Thinking Prize is an annual award for a significant accomplishment achieved through the application of systems thinking to a problem of US national significance in the area of national security, homeland security, energy, environment, health care or education. The 2008 Prize will be a monetary award of $20,000 to an individual or team.

The purpose of the Prize is to advance the development, understanding, and application of applied systems thinking in domains of national significance.

2008 IEEE International Conference on Technologies for Homeland Security

May 12 - 13, 2008

The Conference will provide a forum for innovators to discuss ideas, concepts and findings to date regarding novel and innovative technologies, which address the most pressing national security problems. The conference will bring together innovators from leading universities, research laboratories, Homeland Security Centers of Excellence, small businesses, system integrators and the end user community.

New this year, the Conference will feature parallel tracks with invited talks in non-overlapping technical sessions. Also, the Conference will contain a planned session on Detecting and Protecting Against Terrorist Surveillance.

CBP Hosts Job Fair in D.C. to Recruit for More than 500 Positions

IUP Biology Professor Recieves Grant to Develop Bio-Threat Defense System

Following an announcement by Congressman John P. Murtha, IUP is due to receive $1 million through the House Department of Defense Appropriations Bill that will fund the development of systems for the Department of Defense.  Biology Professor Narayanaswamy Bharathan will direct the development of a rapid screening and detection system of multiple bio-threat agents for the Department of Defense and other federal and state emergency responders.  Bharathan, a molecular biology specialist, is a member of the IUP Weapons of Mass Destruction project team.

'America Is Safer When Our Schools Are Safer' U.S. Schools Receive Life-Saving NOAA Public Alert Radios
Washington, D.C. -- Federal agencies have begun distributing more than 182,000 Public Alert Radios to preschools, Head Start programs, K-12 nonpublic schools and nonpublic school central offices, K-12 school district offices and post-secondary schools. In two earlier phases, the federal government distributed radios to all 97,000 K-12 public schools across the country, bringing the program to a close this September with a life-saving radio in every school in the nation.

Heating Up Emergency Preparedness
SEATTLE, Wash. -- It's <strong>hot,</strong> and the National Weather Service has issued Excessive Heat Warnings for most of inland Southwest Washington and Northwest Oregon, and Air Stagnation Advisories remain in effect through much of this weekend. Even Western Washington is projected to experience record or near-record highs, and emergency managers recommend that families and businesses revisit their disaster preparedness plans with hot weather in mind.
